About Ethereum (ETH)
Ethereum is a programmable blockchain. Besides sending its coin, ether (ETH), you can run small programs called smart contracts on it, which is how most decentralised finance, tokens and many applications work. Ethereum was proposed by Vitalik Buterin in a 2013 whitepaper and launched in 2015.
How does Ethereum work?
Ethereum keeps an account balance for each address (the account model, unlike Bitcoin's UTXOs) and executes contract code in the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Every operation costs gas, paid in ETH: a base fee that is burned plus an optional tip to validators, a design introduced by EIP-1559 in 2021 that removes part of every fee from circulation.
In September 2022, Ethereum switched from proof of work to proof of stake in an event called the Merge. Validators now lock ETH as a bond to propose and attest to blocks, which cut the network's energy use dramatically; see staking explained and proof of work vs. proof of stake.
Tokens on Ethereum
Thousands of tokens live on Ethereum through the ERC-20 standard, including stablecoins such as USDC and USDT. Sending any of them costs gas in ETH, so keep some ETH even if you mostly hold tokens. See crypto network fees and stablecoins explained.
Ether supply
Ether has no fixed maximum supply. New ETH is issued to validators, and the burned base fee removes ETH, so the supply can shrink when the network is busy and grow when it is quiet. Live circulating supply is not shown here because Scrypt Explorer does not track Ethereum's supply; use a block explorer for that.

Ethereum FAQ
What is the price of Ethereum today?
Ethereum (ETH) is trading at $2,690.03, +0.63% over the last 24 hours, based on Scrypt Price's aggregate of 11 market sources.
What is Ethereum?
Ethereum is a programmable blockchain: besides sending money, people run small programs called smart contracts on it, which is how most decentralized finance and many tokens work. Since 2022 it is secured by proof of stake instead of mining.
Where can I store Ethereum?
Scrypt Wallet supports Ethereum natively. It is non-custodial: your keys are created and encrypted on your own device, so only you can spend your ETH.
Prices are an aggregate from independent exchanges and on-chain markets, computed by Scrypt Price and refreshed continuously. Market cap is circulating supply from the chain multiplied by that price and is shown only when both are available. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
