What Is Dogecoin? The Meme Coin With No Supply Cap

Abstract

Dogecoin started as a joke and became one of the most widely held cryptocurrencies. Its supply has no maximum: every block creates 10,000 new coins, so inflation as a percentage keeps falling as the total grows. We explain the design, show live Dogecoin data and describe merged mining with Litecoin.

Keywords: Dogecoin, DOGE, memecoin, no supply cap, merged mining

1. In plain English

Dogecoin was created as a joke based on a popular internet meme, but it kept a real community and a working network. It is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency: computers compete to add pages to a shared ledger and are rewarded in new coins. The Dogecoin software describes itself as a community-driven cryptocurrency inspired by a meme and states that it uses the Scrypt hashing method for proof of work [1].

2. What makes its supply unusual

Bitcoin and Litecoin have hard caps. Dogecoin does not. Once the chain passed block 600,000, its rules pay a constant 10,000 new DOGE per block [2], with a target of one block per minute [3]. That is about 5.26 billion new coins a year. New coins are added forever, but the percentage increase shrinks as the total grows, so inflation gradually falls even though the supply is uncapped.

3. Go deeper

The numbers, and what they mean for an inflation rate, are worked through in Dogecoin tokenomics. On the security side, Dogecoin activated auxiliary proof of work at block 371,337, which allows merged mining with Litecoin [3, 4]. Because miners are always paid by newly created coins, security does not depend entirely on transaction fees, which is one reason its designers kept issuance constant.

5. How to think about a coin with no cap

A cap is one way to promise scarcity; Dogecoin promises predictability instead. Anyone can compute the next year's supply growth exactly. Whether the coin holds its value then depends on demand, which for Dogecoin is cultural and transactional rather than tied to a scarcity story. The arithmetic is in Dogecoin tokenomics.

6. In Scrypt Wallet

Scrypt Wallet supports Dogecoin natively. Check the Dogecoin price page for live supply and network data, use the Dogecoin wallet page to receive, or read Dogecoin mining to see what mining could earn.

Common questions

Does Dogecoin have a maximum supply?

No. After block 600,000 it creates a constant 10,000 DOGE per block with no cap in the code.

Can Dogecoin be mined with a Litecoin miner?

Yes. Both use Scrypt, and merged mining lets the same hashrate secure both chains.
