About Dogecoin (DOGE)
Dogecoin began in December 2013 as a joke built around a popular internet meme, and became one of the most widely recognised cryptocurrencies. Underneath the humour it is a working proof-of-work network: computers compete to add blocks, targeted at one per minute, and the network has run continuously ever since.
Who created Dogecoin?
Dogecoin was created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, who started it as a lighthearted alternative to the serious tone of Bitcoin. Its protocol was built on code from earlier Scrypt coins, Litecoin and Luckycoin, and it has since been maintained by open-source contributors as Dogecoin Core.
How does Dogecoin work?
Dogecoin uses proof of work with the Scrypt algorithm, and a block is targeted every 60 seconds. Its supply rule is unusual: there is no maximum supply. After block 600,000 every block creates a constant 10,000 DOGE, about 5.26 billion new coins a year. The total keeps growing, but the yearly percentage increase keeps shrinking as the base grows; the arithmetic is in Dogecoin tokenomics.
Merged mining with Litecoin
Since block 371,337 Dogecoin has accepted auxiliary proof of work, which lets Litecoin miners secure Dogecoin at no extra electricity cost.
