MWEB (MimbleWimble Extension Blocks) is Litecoin's optional confidentiality layer. It was added in 2022 without changing regular Litecoin, so ordinary LTC works exactly as before and MWEB is something you opt into. This page explains what it does, where its limits are, and what to check before you use it.

What MWEB does

On regular Litecoin, anyone can see addresses, amounts and the links between them. MWEB keeps transactions in a separate extension block. Inside it, amounts are hidden by cryptographic commitments and the link between sender and receiver is much harder to follow. Observers can still check that the rules were followed.

What MWEB doesn't do

MWEB is not an invisibility cloak. Moving coins into MWEB (a peg-in) and back out (a peg-out) is visible on the main chain, so your privacy depends partly on how you enter and leave. Amounts and timing around those steps can still point to you. Some exchanges and services also limit or block MWEB, so a transfer that is private on chain may not be accepted where you want to send it.

MWEB addresses

A regular Litecoin address starts with L, M or ltc1. An MWEB address starts with ltcmweb1 and is much longer. Always check which kind of address you are being asked for. Sending to the wrong kind can fail or leave you with coins you didn't expect where you can't see them.

Privacy Mode in Scrypt Wallet

The Litecoin wallet in Scrypt Wallet has a Privacy Mode setting that uses MWEB. When you switch it on, your account uses an MWEB address for receiving. Because MWEB is newer and not every service handles it, follow this checklist:

You can create a free account and open the Litecoin page to try it. The Litecoin wallet page covers the basics of sending and receiving, and what MWEB is in the glossary goes deeper into the protocol.

Is MWEB right for you?

If you only want to hold and send LTC to exchanges, regular Litecoin is simpler and works everywhere. MWEB is for people who want amounts and counterparties hidden from casual onlookers and who accept the extra steps. Understand your local rules and the receiving service's policy before you use it.

Frequently asked questions

What does MWEB stand for?

MimbleWimble Extension Blocks. It is an optional part of Litecoin that keeps confidential transactions in a separate extension block.

Is MWEB fully anonymous?

No. It hides amounts and makes the link between sender and receiver harder to follow, but moving funds in and out is visible on the main chain, and your own habits can still reveal you.

What does an MWEB address look like?

It starts with ltcmweb1 and is much longer than a regular Litecoin address, which starts with L, M or ltc1.

Can I send MWEB LTC to an exchange?

Only if the exchange accepts MWEB deposits, and many don't. Check the service's rules and test with a small amount first.
