Bitcoin halving

When the next Bitcoin halving happens, what the block reward is now, and what has happened at past halvings. Block height is read live from Scrypt's own node.

The estimate assumes blocks keep arriving at the target of 10 minutes; if hashrate changes, the real date moves. Current block: 969,320.

How the BTC halving works

Bitcoin's consensus code starts the block reward at 50 BTC and halves it every 210,000 blocks, about every four years. Because the reward keeps shrinking, the total supply converges on 21,000,000 BTC, and once the reward is small, miners depend more on transaction fees. The rule is enforced by every full node, so it cannot be changed by one company. See block rewards and halvings and Bitcoin tokenomics.

Halving FAQ

When is the next Bitcoin halving?

The next BTC halving happens at block 1,050,000. The chain is at block 969,320, so 80,680 blocks remain. At the target block time that is about 560 days, around 2028-04-12; the real date shifts with actual block times.

What is the current BTC block reward?

3.125 BTC per block, falling to 1.5625 at the next halving.

What is a halving?

A rule in the protocol that cuts the block reward in half every 210,000 blocks, slowing new issuance so the total approaches its cap.
